Marriage is more than a relationship between two people. It is a covenant established by God.
From the beginning, Scripture reveals God’s design for marriage as the lifelong union of one man and one woman (Genesis 2:18–25; Matthew 19:4–6). AWAKE America likewise affirms marriage as an institution created by God and worthy of honor and protection.
Yet across our nation, marriages are under tremendous spiritual pressure. Temptation, selfishness, bitterness, cultural confusion, and spiritual complacency are tearing at families. The answer is not simply better communication techniques or stronger human resolve. Husbands and wives need the transforming power of Jesus Christ.
If we long to see revival sweep across America, we must pray for revival within our homes. AWAKE America has consistently called believers to return to God’s Word, fervent prayer, repentance, and faithful obedience—and has emphasized the vital role of strong, Christ-centered families in spiritual awakening.
Here are seven Biblical ways to pray for marriages.
1. Pray for Covenant Faithfulness
Marriage is not a temporary agreement sustained only as long as two people remain happy. It is a solemn covenant before God.
Pray that husbands and wives will remember the promises they have made and remain faithful through seasons of joy, disappointment, abundance, suffering, and change. Ask God to strengthen couples to reject the disposable view of marriage promoted by our culture and to honor what He has joined together (Matthew 19:6).
2. Pray for Husbands to Love Sacrificially
Scripture gives husbands a serious calling: “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her” (Ephesians 5:25).
Biblical leadership is not selfish domination. It is sacrificial responsibility patterned after Jesus Christ.
Pray for husbands to lead with courage, humility, purity, wisdom, and self-denial. Ask God to raise up men who open His Word, lead their families in prayer, protect their homes spiritually, and willingly put the good of their wives and children before themselves.
AWAKE America’s teaching on fatherhood similarly emphasizes the responsibility of men to shepherd their families and intentionally disciple the next generation.
3. Pray for Wives to Walk in Biblical Strength and Faithfulness
God also gives wives a sacred calling within marriage.
Pray for wives to grow in wisdom, holiness, discernment, and devotion to Christ. Pray that they will respect their husbands and embrace God’s design for marriage rather than allowing the spirit of the age to define their identity or responsibilities (Ephesians 5:22–24, 33; Proverbs 31:10–31).
Ask God to strengthen Christian women to use their gifts faithfully while cultivating homes marked by Truth, prayer, grace, and godly influence.
4. Pray for Protection From Temptation
No marriage should assume it is immune to temptation.
Scripture warns believers to remain watchful because our adversary seeks to devour (1 Peter 5:8). Sexual temptation, pornography, emotional infidelity, secrecy, pride, comparison, and inappropriate relationships can quickly become footholds for destruction.
Pray for husbands and wives to place a hedge of protection around Christian marriages. Teach them to guard their eyes, minds, hearts, phones, friendships, and private lives.
Pray that the Holy Spirit would expose compromise before it grows, expose hidden sin, strengthen those facing temptation, and create in husbands and wives clean hearts that desire holiness more than temporary gratification.
Pray for couples to have the courage to flee temptation rather than negotiate with it (1 Corinthians 6:18; 10:12–13).
5. Pray for Forgiveness and Reconciliation
Two sinners cannot share a life together without needing forgiveness.
Bitterness keeps records. Grace remembers how much Christhas forgiven.
Scripture commands believers to forgive one another as the Lord has forgiven them (Colossians 3:13). Pray that wounded spouses will refuse to nurture resentment, weaponize past failures, or allow pride to prevent repentance.
Where marriages are fractured, pray for genuine confession, Biblical counsel, changed behavior, rebuilt trust, and, where reconciliation is Biblically possible, the restoration of what has been broken.
6. Pray for Homes Centered Upon Christ
A Christian home should not merely contain Christian decorations, occasional church attendance, or a claim of Christian values. Christ must be Lord of the home.
Pray for couples to read Scripture together, pray together, worship together, serve together, and faithfully teach God’s Truth to their children (Deuteronomy 6:4–9).
AWAKE America has emphasized that spiritual awakening often takes root in ordinary places—around dinner tables, during family prayer, and wherever parents intentionally teach the Word of God.
7. Pray for Marriage to Display the Gospel
Ultimately, marriage is not merely about personal fulfillment. God intends Christian marriage to point beyond itself.
Ephesians 5:31–32 connects marriage with the profound mystery of Christ and His Church. When husbands love sacrificially, wives respond faithfully, sin is confessed, forgiveness is extended, and covenant promises are honored, the world sees something radically different from itself.
So pray beyond your own marriage.
Pray for struggling marriages in your church. Pray for newlyweds. Pray for couples raising children. Pray for marriages facing crisis. Pray for pastors and ministry leaders. Pray for the next generation to reject counterfeit definitions of marriage and joyfully embrace God’s design.
America needs revival—and revival must reach our homes.
May God strengthen marriages, restore broken families, protect husbands and wives from the enemy, and establish homes where Jesus Christ is honored as Lord. As AWAKE America reminds believers, our nation’s deepest needs are spiritual, and lasting transformation begins with repentance, prayer, and a return to the Word of God.
