DEFUNIAK SPRINGS, Fla. — Sixty-nine inmates at the Walton County Jail were baptized during a recent Christian ministry event organized through a partnership involving the Walton County Sheriff’s Office, First Apostolic Church of DeFuniak Springs and New Life Church of Santa Rosa Beach, according to original reporting by CBN News reporter Bri Aunna Nance.

The group included 48 men and 21 women. The Rev. Jonathan King, senior pastor of First Apostolic Church and a volunteer jail chaplain, said more than 70 inmates had requested baptism. The jail had 70 authorized baptism uniforms, but one participant did not appear. The exact date of the ceremony and identities of participants were not disclosed.

Florida Jail Revival Focuses on “Recovery, Not Recidivism”

Walton County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Corey Dobridnia connected the effort to a broader mission:

“Our mantra, if you will, has always been recovery, not recidivism,” he stated.

The sheriff’s office describes the Walton County Jail as a 596-bed facility with an average daily population of about 500, offering educational, recovery, parenting and religious programs aimed at reducing repeat offenses.

King said the ministry reaches people “at their bottom” and continues after release, with some former inmates now attending church and integrating into the congregation.

Prison Ministry Extends Into Recovery and Reentry

Amanda Merritt, executive assistant to New Life Church Pastor Shawn Baker, said the church also baptized 58 women at a women’s jail and 15 boys at a juvenile detention center in separate events.

She described ongoing support after release, including:

  • Transportation assistance
  • Temporary housing
  • Parenting classes
  • Celebrate Recovery programs
  • Connections to Path of Grace and Freedom Life Compass

Merritt noted follow-up is more difficult with male inmates due to restrictions, but also pointed to encouraging outcomes for those who remain engaged.

King emphasized that transformation requires sustained church involvement, not a single event, placing the baptisms within a broader vision of revival in America rooted in discipleship and accountability.

Baptism and True Transformation

Scripture teaches that salvation comes by grace through faith in Jesus Christ—not by the act of baptism itself (Ephesians 2:8–9). Baptism is a public testimony of identification with Christ’s death and resurrection.

Romans 6:4 declares that believers are raised to “walk in newness of life.”

These baptisms represent outward professions that must be followed by:

  • Genuin e repentance
  • Biblical discipleship
  • Fellowship with the local church
  • Lifelong obedience to Christ

As 2 Corinthians 5:17 affirms, “if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.”

The Gospel reaches into the darkest places—and calls the Church to disciple those who respond.
