The Threshold Effect: Why Nominal Religion Cannot Transform the Human Heart
Modern research is confirming a truth Scripture declared long ago: casual belief does not transform individuals or cultures. Studies synthesized in the Oxford Handbook of Religion and Health (2024)—drawing on the work of scholars such as Harold Koenig (Duke University), Tyler VanderWeele (Harvard University), and David Peteet (Harvard Medical School)—show that low-commitment religious involvement produces minimal or inconsistent effects on mental health and human flourishing. By contrast, deeply held and actively practiced beliefs are associated with significant changes in behavior, resilience, and well-being. Yet Scripture takes us even deeper. While commitment may shape behavior, only faith in Jesus Christ can transform the human heart.
