How to Pray Before a Revival Gathering: Prepare the Heart, Not Just the Event

The date is on the calendar. The speakers are preparing. The worship team is ready. Tickets are being distributed, volunteers are serving, and believers across Houston are making plans to gather.

But there is one preparation that matters more than all the others:

Is your heart ready?

On Saturday, September 19, 2026, Christians from across Greater Houston will gather at Smart Financial Centre at Sugar Land for AWAKE Houston—a night of worship, prayer, Biblical preaching, and a call for spiritual revival.

But revival cannot be scheduled for 7:00 PM.

We cannot manufacture it with a packed room, powerful music, the right speaker, or a perfectly planned program. Revival is the work of God. Our responsibility is to come before Him with humble, repentant, expectant hearts and cry out for Him to move.

So in the weeks leading up to a revival gathering, don’t only ask, “Who should I invite?”

Ask, “Lord, what must You change in me?”

1. Ask God to Revive His People

The cry of Psalm 85:6 should become our own:

“Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you?”

Notice where revival begins.

With God’s people.

Before we pray for America to awaken, we must pray for the Church to revive. Before we point to the darkness in our culture, we must allow the light of God’s Word to expose the darkness we have tolerated in our own hearts.

Ask the Lord to reveal where your love for Him has grown cold.

Have you become casual about sin? Distracted in prayer? Neglectful of Scripture? More concerned about the condition of the nation than the condition of your own soul?

Revival prayer begins with an honest acknowledgment: We need God.

Not merely our neighbors. Not merely Washington. Not merely the next generation.

Us.

Pray that God would restore a deep hunger for His Word, a passion for holiness, a burden for the lost, and an uncompromising devotion to Jesus Christ among His people.

2. Ask God to Do What Only He Can Do

Habakkuk lived during a time of spiritual and national crisis. Yet his response was not despair. He remembered what God had done and pleaded for Him to act again:

“LORD, I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds, LORD. Repeat them in our day.”

That is the heart of revival prayer.

Lord, do it again.

We can organize gatherings. We can invite friends. We can preach the Gospel faithfully. We can worship, pray, and proclaim the Truth of Scripture.

But only God can convict a hardened heart.

Only God can bring a prodigal to repentance.

Only God can awaken a spiritually dead sinner to the saving Truth of Jesus Christ.

Only God can breathe fresh spiritual life into His Church.

That should produce both urgency and dependence.

As you prepare for AWAKE Houston, pray specifically for September 19. Pray for every person who will enter the building. Pray for those who do not yet know Christ. Pray for believers who have grown spiritually complacent. Pray for pastors and churches across Houston. Pray for Dr. Michael Youssef as he proclaims God’s Word and for every person involved in serving.

And pray that what happens inside the building will not stay inside the building.

Ask God to send revived believers back into their homes, churches, workplaces, campuses, and neighborhoods as bold witnesses for Jesus Christ.

3. Draw Near to God in Repentance

James does not give believers a complicated strategy for drawing near to God:

“Draw near to God and he will draw near to you.”

But the verses that follow make clear that drawing near involves repentance.

“Cleanse your hands.”
“Purify your hearts.”
“Humble yourselves before the Lord.”

This is where preparation for revival becomes personal.

Before asking God to change America, ask Him to search you.

Is there bitterness you have refused to surrender? Pride you have excused? Sexual sin you have hidden? A relationship you know needs reconciliation? A habit God has repeatedly convicted you about? An area of your life where you are demanding your own way instead of submitting to His Word?

Do not wait until September 19 to deal with it.

Bring it before God now.

Biblical repentance is more than feeling sorry. It is agreeing with God about our sin and turning from it toward obedience.

We do not repent in order to earn God's mercy. We repent because Christ has made mercy available to sinners through His death and resurrection. When we confess our sins, we come to a Savior who has already paid the price for all who place their faith in Him.

Prepare More Than Your Calendar

AWAKE Houston will be one night.

But our prayer is for something far greater than one night.

We long to see Christians revived, churches strengthened, prodigals restored, unbelievers brought to saving faith in Jesus Christ, and cities awakened to the Truth of the Gospel.

That kind of movement will not begin with better production.

It begins on our knees.

So before you arrive at Smart Financial Centre on September 19, prepare your heart.

Open God’s Word.

Confess your sin.

Pray for the lost.

Ask God to revive His Church.

Invite someone who needs the hope of Jesus Christ.

And come ready—not simply to attend an event, but to surrender yourself afresh to the Lord.

Revival begins when God’s people stop merely asking Him to change the world around them and humbly ask Him to begin His work in them.
