Do you know someone who is far from God?
Maybe it's a son or daughter who has walked away from the faith. A friend who dismisses the Gospel. A coworker who has never heard the Truth about Jesus Christ. Or someone you've prayed for year after year, wondering if their heart will ever change.
Don't stop praying.
The Bible makes it clear: Apart from Jesus Christ, people are spiritually lost and in desperate need of salvation. But Scripture also reveals a God who is mighty to save. No heart is beyond His reach. No life is too broken for His transforming power.
And as believers, we have both the privilege and responsibility of interceding for those who do not yet know Him.
If you're wondering how to pray for the lost, Scripture gives us a powerful place to begin.
1. Pray with a Heart That Longs for Their Salvation
"Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved." — Romans 10:1 (ESV)
The apostle Paul didn't simply recognize that people needed salvation. He carried a deep, personal burden for their souls.
His response? Prayer.
When was the last time your heart broke over someone who doesn't know Jesus?
It's easy to become frustrated with unbelieving friends, discouraged by family members who reject the Gospel, or indifferent toward a world increasingly hostile to Biblical Truth.
But Paul shows us a better response.
Pray that God would give you His compassion for the lost. Ask Him to replace frustration with love, indifference with urgency, and discouragement with perseverance.
Revival begins with hearts that care deeply about what matters to God.
2. Pray for Spiritual Blindness to Be Removed
Read 2 Corinthians 4:3-4.
The Bible tells us that unbelievers are spiritually blinded by "the god of this world," Satan, who seeks to keep them from seeing the light of the Gospel of Christ.
This is why reaching the lost is more than winning an argument or presenting convincing evidence.
The greatest obstacle is spiritual, and only God can overcome it.
You cannot reason someone into spiritual life. You cannot persuade a hardened heart into genuine repentance by human effort alone.
But you can pray to the God who opens blind eyes.
Ask Him to expose the lies that keep people from recognizing their need for a Savior. Pray that false beliefs, pride, and spiritual confusion would give way to the Truth of Jesus Christ.
Don't underestimate what God can do in a heart that appears completely closed to Him.
3. Pray That God's Light Will Break Through the Darkness
Read 2 Corinthians 4:5-6.
Paul reminds believers that the same God who commanded light to shine out of darkness has shone His light into our hearts to reveal His glory in the face of Jesus Christ.
Think about that.
The God who spoke light into existence is the same God who can bring spiritual light into the darkest heart.
That means the person you've been praying for isn't beyond His power.
Your rebellious child. Your skeptical friend. Your unbelieving neighbor.
God is able to do what you cannot.
Pray specifically that He would illuminate their hearts with the Truth of the Gospel. Ask Him to reveal the holiness of God, the reality of sin, and the saving grace found in Jesus Christ alone.
True spiritual awakening happens when God opens hearts to see the glory of Christ.
4. Pray for Workers to Bring the Gospel
"The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few." — Matthew 9:37 (ESV)
When Jesus saw the crowds, He had compassion on them because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.
Then He gave His disciples a clear command:
Pray for workers to enter the harvest.
There are people in your community, across America, and around the world who desperately need to hear the Gospel.
But how will they hear unless someone tells them?
Pray that God would raise up faithful pastors, missionaries, evangelists, and everyday believers who will boldly proclaim Jesus Christ without compromise.
Pray for Gospel opportunities in schools, workplaces, neighborhoods, and nations where following Christ comes at great personal cost.
And remember: When you pray for workers, be willing to become one.
5. Pray for Opportunities to Share Jesus
You may be the very person God intends to use to reach someone you've been praying for.
But are you ready?
Too often, believers pray for the salvation of others while remaining silent about the One who saves.
Prayer should never become an excuse for avoiding Gospel witness.
Ask God to open doors for meaningful conversations. Pray for wisdom to recognize those opportunities and courage to speak the Truth in love.
You don't need to have every answer.
You need to faithfully point people to Jesus Christ—His sinless life, His atoning death on the cross, and His victorious resurrection.
The Gospel is not merely good advice. It is the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ.
And a world lost in darkness desperately needs to hear it.
6. Pray for Genuine Repentance and Saving Faith
The goal of praying for the lost is not simply that people become more religious, attend church, or adopt Christian values.
The goal is salvation through Jesus Christ.
Pray that unbelievers would recognize their sin, turn from it in repentance, and place their faith in Jesus as Savior and Lord.
Ask God to bring genuine conviction rather than temporary emotion, lasting transformation rather than outward religious behavior.
We cannot manufacture repentance or save another person's soul.
But we can faithfully intercede, trusting the Holy Spirit to work through the proclamation of God's Word.
And when someone responds to the Gospel, continue praying that they will grow in their faith, become rooted in Scripture, and boldly follow Christ.
7. Pray Persistently, Even When You See No Change
Perhaps you've been praying for someone for months, years, or even decades.
You're tired of waiting.
You've shared the Gospel. You've invited them to church. You've tried to answer their questions.
And still, nothing seems to change.
Don't let what you cannot see discourage you from praying to the God who sees everything.
Continue bringing that person's name before the Lord. Continue sharing the Truth when opportunities arise. Continue demonstrating the love of Christ without compromising His Word.
Remember, salvation belongs to the Lord. Your responsibility is faithfulness—not controlling the outcome.
Trust God's power, His wisdom, and His perfect timing.
Revival Begins with a Burden for the Lost
America doesn't simply need better leadership, stronger institutions, or temporary cultural reform.
America desperately needs Jesus Christ.
And that spiritual awakening begins with the Gospel—the only message that can reconcile sinful people to a holy God.
So don't just pray for our nation in general. Pray for people by name.
Pray for the neighbor across the street. The coworker in the next office. The loved one sitting across your dinner table.
Pray for those who have never heard the name of Jesus and those who have heard His name but rejected His Truth.
Let Romans 10:1 become the cry of your own heart: that they may be saved.
Revival begins when God's people stop treating lost souls as someone else's responsibility and begin faithfully praying, boldly witnessing, and pleading for hearts to turn to Jesus Christ.
TAKE ACTION: Write down the names of three people in your life who do not know Christ. Commit to praying for them by name every day this week. Then ask God to show you how you can faithfully share the Gospel with them.
America needs revival. And the lost need Jesus. Let's get on our knees and pray.
