Jesus prayed for His Church to be united. That should move us to examine how we speak, how we disagree, and how faithfully we love one another.
In John 17, His prayer for unity stands alongside His prayer that believers would be sanctified by God’s Truth. As we seek revival in America, both must shape our prayers. We need churches that stand firmly on Scripture and believers who practice the humility and love Scripture commands.
Biblical unity grows as God’s people surrender together to Jesus Christ and His Word.
Pray for Unity Grounded in God’s Word
“Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth” (John 17:17, NIV).
Jesus then prayed for those who would believe in Him through the apostles’ message (John 17:20–23). The faith He calls us to share has a foundation: the Truth God has revealed. We cannot honor His prayer for unity while dismissing His Word.
Dr. Michael Youssef makes this clear in his sermon “Facing the Future with Confidence,” explaining that Christian unity centers on the Gospel, God’s Word, and the glory of Jesus. Salvation through Christ alone belongs at the heart of that unity.
Pray that churches will submit to the Bible as God’s inerrant Word. Ask Him to strengthen pastors to proclaim the deity of Christ, His death and resurrection, and salvation by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. These convictions are essential to the Gospel we share.
Pray for Humility That Begins With You
Ephesians 4:1–3 calls believers to live with humility, gentleness, patience, and love. Paul urges us to “keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace” (verse 3, NIV). Unity is a gift of the Holy Spirit that we are responsible to preserve.
That responsibility reaches into ordinary conversations. It touches the criticism we repeat, the motives we assume, and the resentment we quietly protect. We can defend a Biblical position while speaking in a way that dishonors the Lord we claim to serve.
Before asking God to change someone else, invite Him to examine your own heart. Have you confused your preferences with His commands? Have you contributed to division through pride or careless words?
Pray for the grace to listen carefully, receive correction, and seek forgiveness when you have sinned. Revival begins with repentance, and our treatment of fellow believers must be part of that repentance.
Pray for Discernment in Disagreements
Ephesians 4:4–6 reminds us that believers belong to one body, share one Spirit and one hope, confess one Lord and one faith, and are united in one baptism under one God and Father. Our shared life in Christ must shape the way we handle differences. BibleGateway
Some disagreements involve personal preferences, such as musical style or the timing of a church gathering. Others concern the authority of Scripture or the Gospel itself. Those differences require discernment.
Pray for wisdom to recognize the distinction. Ask God to help believers show generosity toward one another in matters of preference while remaining steadfast where Scripture speaks clearly.
Paul later connects spiritual maturity with resisting false teaching and expressing Truth with love (Ephesians 4:14–15). Biblical conviction and Christlike conduct belong together. Pray for leaders who can correct error with courage and patience, helping their congregations grow in faithfulness to Christ.
Pray for Reconciliation and a Faithful Witness
Jesus connected the unity of His followers with the world recognizing that the Father sent Him (John 17:21–23). Our relationships have implications for our witness. BibleGateway
When Christians forgive, serve, and pursue reconciliation, they give visible expression to the Gospel they proclaim. Ask God to expose bitterness, heal fractured relationships, and give His people courage to address sin honestly and compassionately. Ephesians 4:31–32 calls believers to abandon bitterness and malice and extend the forgiveness they have received in Christ.
Pray for churches in your community by name. Thank God when another faithful congregation sees people coming to Christ. Ask Him to replace rivalry with joy over the advance of the Gospel.
Then take a practical step: pray with a fellow believer, encourage your pastor, or begin a needed conversation with humility. Let your prayers lead you into obedience.
Seek Revival Through Unity in Truth
As we ask God to awaken America, we must seek His renewing work in our own congregations. Pray for believers to grow in holiness, love one another sincerely, and speak of Jesus with boldness.
People in our families, neighborhoods, and communities need to hear the Gospel. Pray that churches will stand together in proclaiming the crucified and risen Savior, with compassion for the lost and unwavering confidence in His Word.
This week, set aside time to pray for unity in your church. Invite another believer to join you, and bring these requests before the Lord together.
Heavenly Father, unite Your Church in the Truth of Your Word. Forgive our pride, bitterness, and willingness to compromise. Teach us to love one another, receive Your correction, and pursue peace with humility. Strengthen our pastors to proclaim the Gospel faithfully, and give us courage to follow Jesus in obedience. Revive Your people and use our witness to draw others to salvation in Christ alone. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
